Thanksgiving is a treacherous time for many of us alcoholics. It begins the holiday season and, particularly for the newcomer, resurrects memories of embarrassing behavior. But as sobriety progresses, we set aside a store of happier memories—good fun and fellowship with AA friends.

My favorite Thanksgiving recollection now is of my fifth sober one. I had finally worked at one place long enough to earn a paid vacation, and I decided on a trip to New York.
