Birthday boy gets a big surprise at his first sober yuletide event
When I got to AA in San Francisco in June of 1981, I remember thinking, I sure better do it now, because Christmas is in six months and there’s no way I’ll sober up then! My natal birthday is also in December, so that whole month had always been one big party. But I knew I had to stop drinking now, and I was even desperate enough to try AA. I had told a friend about my drinking, and to my surprise (and slight annoyance), he said he had a friend in the program who would call me. I hesitated, but agreed, and two days later I found myself in AA.
